Stainless Steel Sheet Grades
Stainless steel sheets are most commonly available in grades 304 and 316, which together account for the vast majority of industrial and consumer applications. Choosing between them typically depends on whether your project needs basic durability or high-level corrosion resistance.
Grade 304: The All-Purpose Standard
Often referred to as 18/8 stainless steel, Grade 304 is the most common form of stainless steel used worldwide. It contains high levels of chromium and nickel, providing excellent durability for general use. It is highly formable, easy to clean, and the most cost-effective option. However, It is susceptible to pitting corrosion when exposed to salt (saline) or high-chloride environments.
Best For: Kitchen appliances, indoor furniture, sinks, and automotive trim.
Grade 316: The Marine-Grade Specialist
Grade 316 is the “heavy-duty” upgrade. While it looks identical to 304, it includes a crucial addition: Molybdenum (2–3%). This element significantly increases its resistance to chlorides, salt spray, and industrial solvents. It has superior resistance to “tea staining” and rusting in harsh, salty conditions but has a higher cost and slightly more difficult to fabricate than 304.
Best For: Marine environments, chemical processing, outdoor coastal structures, and medical equipment.
Stainless Steel Sheet Finish
Beyond the chemical composition, the surface finish plays a crucial role in the sheet’s final utility, affecting everything from its aesthetic appeal and light reflectivity to how easily it can be cleaned or how well it hides everyday wear and tear.
No. 1 (Hot Rolled / Pickled)
This finish has a dull, rough, and uneven appearance created by hot rolling the steel and then removing scale through a pickling process. It is used where aesthetics are not important, such as in heavy industrial applications, structural components, or parts that will be further processed.
No. 2B (Matte Finish)
This is the most widely used “mill finish,” appearing smooth, slightly reflective, and greyish in color. It is produced by cold-rolling and then heat-treating the steel, making it an ideal, cost-effective base for industrial parts or further polishing.
No. 4 (Brushed / Satin Finish)
Characterized by fine, parallel polishing lines, the No. 4 finish provides a distinct “brushed” look that is both decorative and functional. It is highly popular in kitchens and public spaces because it effectively hides fingerprints, scuffs, and minor scratches.
No. 8 (Mirror Finish)
This is the most reflective finish available, achieved by polishing the steel with successively finer abrasives until it acts like a glass mirror. It is primarily used for decorative architectural accents, high-end signage, and safety mirrors where glass would be too fragile.
BA (Bright Annealed)
BA finish is cold-rolled and then processed in a controlled atmosphere to prevent scaling, resulting in a smooth, highly reflective surface. While it is shiny like a mirror finish, it often retains a slight cloudiness compared to the true No. 8 polish.
Hairline Finish
Similar to the No. 4 finish but with much longer, continuous, and finer grit lines that span the entire length of the sheet. It offers a very sleek, high-end architectural appearance and is frequently chosen for elevator interiors and luxury building facades.
